ISO 9001 is the internationally recognized standard for the management of a Quality Management System (QMS). ISO 9001 is part of a family of standards published by the “ISO 9000 series”. It applies to the various processes that create and control the products and services an organization supplies. All of the requirements of this International Standard are generic and are intended to apply to any product or services, regardless of type, size and product provided. In general, the objective of ISO 9001 is to provide a set of requirements that, if properly implemented, will provide you with confidence that you will meet the needs and expectations your customer and comply with applicable regulations. The requirements pertain to a range of topics, including top management’s commitment to quality, customer focus, adequacy of resources, process management, quality planning, product design, calibration of measuring equipment, processes to resolve customer complaints, corrective/preventive actions and a requirement to drive continual improvement of the QMS.
In general, registration to ISO 9001 by an accredited certification body shows an overall commitment to quality, customers, and a willingness to work towards improving efficiency. By becoming an ISO 9001 certified organization, your organization demonstrates the existence of an effective Quality Management System (QMS) that satisfies the rigors of an independent, external audit.
